I finished The Pact by Jodi Picoult on Tuesday evening. And I have to say: It is one of the most amazing novels I've ever read. She writes with such fluidity and grace that I couldn't help but be sucked into this novel. The characters seem real, the prose is beautiful (did I mention that?) and I kept wanting to read it as quickly as possible, but forcing myself to read it slowly or put it down, cause I didn't want it to end. Possibly, a bad analogy or a mixed metaphor: I just seriously found myself so immersed in her storytelling, that I didn't want to get out of the pool. Kind of like when I was younger and my mother had to force me to get out of the hotel's swimming pool.

I love her. She may be surfacing (what's with me and water today?) to the top of my favorite authors' list. I'm now reading Salem Falls by her and we'll see. My mother bought it for me as well as Songs of the Humpback Whale. God, I'm a dork.

And for more dorkiness, here's a meme I stole from [info]delmarmar

You scored as Serenity (Firefly)

You like to live your own way and don't enjoy when anyone but a friend tries to tell you should do different. Now if only the Reavers would quit trying to skin you.

I put my Buffy icon up to show my Whedon Allegiance.
1st-Mar-2008 11:20 pm - Bette Davis Eyes!!!!
backstage
Just got back from the Bette Davis movie marathon at the Loews in Journal Square. Last night, we saw Now, Voyager which I felt was adorable, funny, charming, and an overall wonderful romantic comedy. They just don't make 'em like that anymore.

This afternoon was Jezebel. While it was my least favorite, I still enjoyed it. Before the movie, the gentleman speaking talked about how it's always compared to Gone With the Wind. How it had a smaller budget. I had heard a story once that in order to get cast as Scarlett O'Hara, Bette Davis made Jezebel. But, it was actually the other way around. After making the film, Bette Davis was the audience favorite to play Scarlett, but Selznick didn't want her. And though I love Bette Davis, I don't blame him, because I adore Vivien Leigh in the film.

This evening, the final movie, was one of my all-time favorite movies (number one actually being Gone With the Wind), What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?. It was so wonderful to get to see this movie on the big screen. And although nowadays, it's a bit "campy" and whatnot, it's such an interesting psychological suspense movie. And for its day, the twist at the end of the movie, can only be matched by The Sixth Sense or The Usual Suspects. Overall, it was so much fun to watch.

And as I posted before, at the end of March is The Princess Bride, which I will be making sure to remind everyone of closer and closer. Actually, I'm counting down. However, in April, some of you may also want to make the trip out for another BRILLIANT classic, All About Eve. It's only 6 bucks (okay, and the 3 dollar round trip for you PATH train people). Hope to see you all there.

EDIT: Forgot to mention one thing. After the movie last night, the four of us were discussing a remake (not the crappy one the Redgraves attempted), but a really well acted remake of Baby Jane. We ran the gamut of top actresses (Meryl Streep, Olympia Dukakis, Shirley MacLaine, Toni Collete (when she's older) among others). But, I finally came up with the perfect pairing which we were all agreed upon. Geena Davis as Blanche and Susan Sarandon as Baby Jane. I think they would be awesome. Let your imaginations flow and tell me who you'd cast.

1. Pick 10 of your favorite movies.
2. Go to IMDb and find a quote from each movie.
3. Post them here for everyone to guess.
4. Strike it out when someone guesses correctly, and put who guessed it and the movie.
5. Looking them up is cheating, please don't.

As usual with movie things, these aren't necessarily my "favorites", but rather movies that are on my mind at the moment.

1. [gasps] Oh my, nobody can get into that position.
Sure they can, let me show you.
[tries to do the position]
Get off me!

2. Remember what Daddy always says - an ounce of pretension is worth a pound of manure!

3. What's he doing?
He's licking the glass and making obscene gestures with his hands.

4. The rain. Sometimes it gives me the blues.

5. Now if you two don't mind, I'm going to bed before either of you can come up with another clever idea to get us all killed - or worse, expelled.
She needs to sort out her priorities!

6. I said, it's no good talking to him, he's deaf as a post.
Mumble mumble mumble! You're a wonderful conversational companion!
You can talk, all you do is moan!
No good! Can't hear you!

7. I got a call from your math teacher, yesterday. She says that you were drawing horses in your math book.
Unicorns. They were unicorns.
What?
Nothing.

8. I remember it, I do. It's there, I know it is, because when I look at you, I can feel it. And-and I look at you, and I... and I'm home.

9. We have matching luggage again... The bags under your eyes.

10. Look, are you just fiddling around with me or what?
I just want you to feel you're doing well. I hate for people to die embarrassed.
11th-Feb-2008 09:39 am - Cold inside as well as outside
backstage
Well, I hope you all wanted to taste a Carlosicle, cause you're about to. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised with my diverse taste in music, books and movies, if there weren't a Ben & Jerry's-like variety of flavors for everyone to enjoy.

My desk is right next to the window where my air conditioner sits. And since it's freezing cold, there is a beautiful draft, which, if my office were as hot as Hades as it usually is, wouldn't be a problem, but that is not the case. Of course, this is the coldest day we've seen in a while, so of course, my heater doesn't work. Great. I'm sitting here, haven't even taken off my hooded, zip-up sweater. Of course as is Carlos's law (as well as Murphy's), I left my brand new knitted hat at home, thinking it was in my coat, not remembering, I wore my jean jacket on Saturday and left it in there. I'm a schmuck.

Other than that, had a wonderful time of course with all my friends on Saturday. Duncan pointed out, "What's going on with you and Keith lately? You're like showing up to things." I reminded him of my New Year's resolution to attend more friends' parties and things. Even though Keith didn't feel well due to his back. But, I couldn't miss the chance to see Sara and Adam. No way.

My apologies to Tami though, cause I didn't come to your place after, in fact, I didn't get home until almost 8:00PM, so there would have been no way I would have left after that. (Sorry, Tam-tam, I love you, and I'm making it up to you very soon. Also, sorry, I forgot to e-mail you back).

Friday night, Keith and I saw The Brave One with Jodie Foster. It was a really good movie. I loved her performance, but then again, I usually do.
